Title: Invictus: “Is it Hollywood or History?” In this essay I will prove the movie, Invictus,was mostly historically accurate by pointing out the real historical people and events, summarizing the movie and comparing how the movie displayed the true people and events that came to pass. By doing this I am going to point out what does and does not really happen in history by looking at the movie and other sources that will aid me in finding this information.I will look at the time period, people, and events that came to pass. Now we take a peek at the historical background of Nelson Mandela and I will include all of the hardships he has faced just for his country. Nelson Mandela’s birth name was Rolihlahla meaning ‘troublemaker’ and was changed to Nelson Mandela when he went to school. In this film, Mandela became president of course this was just like history. This movie portrayed that Mandela did some time in prison for standing up for what he believed. The poem, Invictus, helped Mandela through his time in prison. Mandela’s eyes were sensitive to the light because prison was dark and he spent all of those years in the darkness. The plane that went over the rugby stadium actually flew over the stadium in real life (Effron, Lauren.) The pilot did this with purpose of energizing the crowd and provide a dramatic opening to the big game (South African Pilot.) Mandela also played a huge role in real life to the Springbok 's victory by motivating them. He was active in cheering in sports and tending to the country’s affairs.
