The goal of the experiment is to understand the cell. The students will understand the characteristics of the Cell.

Amylopast: An organelle in some plant cells that stores the waste of the cell. Cell membrane: thin layer of protein outside of cell that protects the whole structure. Cell Wall: can be found only in plant cells, provides more protection to the cell. Centrosome: helps the cell divide. Cytoplasm: organelles are located within this jelly-like structure. Golgi Body: produces membranes that surround the lysosomes. Lysosome: enzymes that digest cell nutrients. Mitochondrion:

3. Discuss the purpose of doing the experiment. Why are you going to do this lab and why is it important?

The students will begin to recognize what the cell is comprised of, and how it functions. The students will be able to distinguish the difference between animal and plant cells. This lab is important because we have contact with cells in our everyday life. It is a part of us and a part of the food we consume.

4. Discuss what might be the possible outcomes of the experiment. What do you think is going to happen or what results do you expect?

5. Describe the basic laboratory procedure used to gather the data. What are you doing in this lab?

The students will use the demonstration the professor provided to take a dry mount of an animal cell and look under a microscope. The students are going to record the observations. Next, the students will repeat the produce for the onion skin. After the students observe the object, the students will identify the main structures. The students will than take samples of cells from the inside of the cheek and examine that as well. Finally, the students will examine a sample from pond water.
