Aim

For my graded unit project, I will investigate the subject area of Language and Literacy. My aim is to consider how the story area within the nursery can be beneficial for the children’s development of both language and literacy skills. I have decided to focus on the story area of the nursery by recreating the area to find ways in which it becomes a fun educational experience.

Rationale

Professionally I discussed my chosen topic with my mentor, and she is happy to support me as I carry out my project. As a professional I am committed to enhancing the children’s literacy and language skills using my knowledge I gained through this course. As a facilitator my personal experiences of reading books have given me positive memories as I enjoyed reading and listening to stories with my parents. (Appendix 7) I will then use the Leuven Involvement Scale (Appendix 8), this will show how involved each child was whilst taking part in the experiences and if the activity is meeting each child’s needs. I also plan to visit another nursery to get a different perspective and take ideas for the new space that I will recreate within the nursery. To meet my aims, I intend to analyse national documents to find out information on Language and Literacy in early years in the form of a Literature Review (Appendix 1). Websites such as ‘Twinkl Education Publishing (2017)’, ‘Sparkle Box Teacher Resources (2017)’ and ‘TES Teacher Resources (2017)’ will be used to conduct different activities in which I will use for my investigation.
