The Inuit actually have many things that are different from the other two tribes. This specific tribe builds igloos tipis, and Inuvialuit houses. The other tribes might build tipis too, but the Inuit built igloos and Inuvialuit houses. The other tribes make houses like longhouses and tipis. An igloo was a temporary, dome-shaped shelter made out of snow blocks. The blocks were cut from the snow, and piled in a spiral shape, leaning in slightly. This gave the igloo its dome shape. Soft snow was used to fill any holes, and add extra insulation. Depending on the size of the igloo, it usually took the Inuit 20-30 minutes to build. Larger, more permanent igloos could reach 4 metres in diameter and 3 metres in height. Sleeping platforms were made of ice blocks, covered with fur. The Inuit of the western Arctic (Inuvialuit) were about half of all Canadian Inuit. They lived in the richest part of the high arctic and had access to trees. They used them to build permanent log-and-sod houses in which they lived mostly in the winter. They excavated a hole into the ground and set up a ring of vertical poles. The poles were tilted inwards at the top so that blocks of sod could be piled up over them and remain in place. The result was a partially subterranean log-and-sod hut with the floor below ground to preserve warmth.A fireplace provided warmth.Sometimes villages of 10 to 20 of these log-and-sod houses …show more content…
Out of the Inuit, Haida, and the Sioux, the Haida is actually the only tribe that uses horses for transportation. Horses carried five times more than the dogs did so they used that as an advantage. Travois were placed on horses as well as dogs. With a horse travois, they could also carry lots more gear than before. They could carry larger tent poles, and make larger tipis than before. Everyone could keep far more possessions since they were now easier to carry. The swift horse made hunting easier, and traveling further distances a reality. Within each nomadic group, there would be a band chief who was supported if the band could catch enough game for food, and were protected from enemies. Chiefs would advise, then a council of elders would come to a decision. In the Blood tribe the council of Clan Elders was called Inaki.Generally the leader was wise and patient or showed other qualities of leadership, or had a good deal of wealth.Public shame was the form of punishment or discipline. When food was scarce, bands would split into even smaller groups and go separate ways. The leaders were often prophets, Elders, valiant warriors, or wealthy persons and they each performed specific duties. In tribal relations there were no boundaries, such as the one that now exists between Canada and the United States. But each tribe recognized the traditional hunting areas of other tribes. Tribes
