He has fear that indigenous suicides are treated in a different manor than other public health issues. We can infer that the Canadian government does not seem to be to alarmed at the rate at which the Inuits are committing suicide at. According to Obed Inuit suicide rates are 11 times higher than the national average. There is a need for specific plans to help the inuit population, which is where he hopes the government will step in. Because current policies have yet to directly address the Inuit population (Kirkup: 2016). Along with the lack of government attention to the Inuit population, they also have a different method of financing programs. Because they do not reside on reservations, they are not under reservation funding which is given from the government. Many indigenous groups will not benefit from policies and actions taken by the government because it will not impact their daily lifestyles. The disconnect between ways of life adds to the tension the Inuit community feels because the federal government has yet to implement policies geared strictly to this population as mentioned before. The Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) is a national organization that represents the Inuit community. They work to protect and advocate for their rights and best interests to be held. Through unity, this organization believes that the Inuits can find prosperity. Improving health and well-being is accomplished through public education and outreach which works in combination with representation of the Inuit community for policy guidance (“Health and Wellbeing for Inuit Communities in Canada”). The ITK helps bridge the gap in communication between the federal government and the indigenous groups. In the past they have had success in addressing the outbreak of TB within the community. And through their understanding of the culture along with how this disease affected the people they were able to created a strategy specific enough to benefit the people whose rights they
