Stereotypes are everywhere in the world. Our ridged expectations of a community are sometimes all we know about that certain group. The students had a preconceived idea about the Harvard students being snobby and the Law students thought the students would not take the task seriously. This chapter really hit on many stereotypes throughout the chapter and how powerful it can be when stereotypes are broken. I would never think to take my class on a field trip to a courthouse to participate in a mock trial.…
Susan Cain, graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law and former Wall Street lawyer, published her book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking on January 24, 2012. In Quiet, Cain exposes the importance of introverts. Earlier that month, on January 13, 2015, Cain published an article entitled “The Rise of the New Groupthink.” The article is Cain’s book Quiet tremendously condensed. A month later, Judith Warner publishes a book review of Quiet entitled “Inside Intelligence.”…
According to the Journal of the Adolescent, there are over 1 million children involved in gang activity in the USA. In The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton, the revolves around the rivalry between two gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. The members of the Greasers are comprised of members of a lower socioeconomic status than the Socs. They don’t have nearly as much money as the Socs but they manage to get by. Conversely, the Socs are comprised of the more fortunate class. They have expensive cars, houses, and clothing.…
With this book Susan Cain is celebrating the opposite to extrovert, introverts. It’s time for introverts to step up and make themselves heard, they have so much to offer. Like the example Cain made at the end of the book were she told the reader who the author of Alice in Wonderland was, an introvert. Without introverts we wouldn’t have some of the greatest things on the world. Susan Cain wants the world to know this and for the introverts to step up.…
Do Not Judge a Book By its Cover Walking down the hallway after class, you see someone getting picked on for the outfit they are wearing. Being an outsider, is he or she misjudged or misunderstood? Outsiders are simply misjudged because many people do not take the time to get to know someone. They are misjudged for their differences whether it is the hobbies they have or their physical appearance.…
Susan Cain: Power of Introverts Personally, I am an introvert but when around people I am close with I am suddenly part ofa extrovert; a talker. Sophomore year I really expressed that which often got me into a heap of trouble; for expressing myself. This TED Talk by Susan Cain might have to be my favorite because it relates to me very much. It was so insightful, because I am an INTROVERT.…
If introversion is looked up on the internet, a considerable number of sites will refer back to the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. In addition to her book Susan Cain also did a Ted Talk called The Power of Introverts. By raising awareness with examples such as Susan Cain’s book and Ted Talk, society can give birth to a new level of understanding of introverts. In her book and Ted Talk Susan Cain explains how society misunderstands introversion. This book and TedTalk have been an amazing kick-start to raising awareness.…
By acknowledging that ADHD is three to four times more common in boys than girls, it is important to look at the gender stereotypes that coincide with this statistic. Girls tend to fall under a different category of inattention subtype. This subtype is characterized by being distracted frequently along with failure to complete work due to disorganization and forgetfulness. (). This shows similar aspects of the other types but it creates a larger stereotype due to the fact that girls are the quiet ones and these characteristics are almost all nonverbal.…
1. Thinking about everything we have read, watched, and discussed this semester, what were the one or two things that really stood out or had an impact on you? One thing that stood out from the semester to me was how apparent cognitive dissonance is in our everyday lives and in most of the decisions, we make. It made me more aware of the decisions I make and the justifications for those decisions.…

Often, people are told not to judge a book by its cover, or just not to judge at all, but everyone has heard something about a specific group of people that sounded a bit exaggerated or hard to believe, maybe something like all blondes are dumb? What has been heard are common misconceptions and stereotypes. Often, stereotypes are used to categorize groups of people, whether it be by race, religion, behaviors, or even what a person likes. Misconceptions are views based off of incorrect understandings on people’s race, religion, behaviors, likes, and dislikes. In today's world there are stereotypes and misconceptions because people often try to convince others of what others think.…
Introverts are actively discriminated in workplaces because of society’s tendency to favor extroverts. As Grant, Gino, and Hoffman found in their studies, 96% of managers and executives in companies are extroverts. This shows a clear inclination towards extroverts when it comes to leadership positions, as it is estimated that only half of the general population is extroverted. “In a 2006 survey, 65% of senior corporate executives viewed introversion as a barrier to leadership” (Grant, Gino, Hoffman). People might say that this makes sense, since it is a well-known fact that extroverts are better leaders.…
Here, it is important to note how contrasting research suggests that in an unpredictable context it is actually introverts who make more effective leaders because they “listen and show greater receptivity” (Grant, 2010, p.1). This alternative viewpoint exposes the differences of situational contexts and coincides with the downside of extraversion being impulsivity and engaging in risky behaviour (Robbins & Judge, 2017, p.181). Nonetheless, the research and general consensus suggests that extraversion is a key predictor of effective leadership because it helps to establish vision and engage followers. Extraversion is linked to personal power which is another important feature for effective leadership as they both generate commitment from followers which helps to improve…
Nerd, geek, emo, gothic? How many of you have heard someone use these phrases or said them yourself? The sad truth is, stereotypes are very common in society. Hello everyone, today I will be talking to you about the negative effects of stereotyping. I will be mentioning what stereotypes are, their impact on people and society and the media’s influence.…
I attended the “Who You Are is How You Lead” workshop that emphasized introverts and how they lead. My leadership style is predominantly extroverted where I am addressing issues head on and trying to complete tasks as quickly as possible. I learned that introverts do not engage problems the same way as I do. In fact, they prefer the exact opposite. Introverts tend to sit back and analyze the pros and cons of every available option before acting.…
