As Americans, we live in a world that is controlled by powerful people. As our history evolved, our historical leaders fell into the categories of an introvert or extrovert. We live in a world where we are taught to follow extroverts however introverts are the backbone of society. Although extroverts led the marches, the introverts were close behind dominating in silence. Introverts are usually the individuals that gain their energy by being alone compared to extraverts who gain their energy from others in a social stimulation. In the last 80 years, there were multiple introverts who made large impacts on the society through literature all the way through to the Civil Rights movement. The Difference Throughout the nation, the human race is split between two categories in society. First, there is the introvert who is described as someone who is energized internally; they prefer to spend time alone or with smaller groups. It is also said that they think before they act or speak as stated in Elizabeth Bernstein’s “Not An Introvert, Not An Extrovert? You May Be an Ambivert,” Also described in Bernstein’s article is an extrovert who is described as someone who is energized externally; they enjoy being around others and brainstorming ideas together for a bigger outcome. It is also said that extroverts become easily bored when they are alone. Because of this spectrum, introverts and extroverts are sometimes put at an professional and personal advantage and disadvantage when placed in certain stimuli. One out of every two or three people are introverts. In other words, if you are not an introvert then you are at least married to one or closely associated with one. To elaborate one is not more successful than the other, however they do balance out society as a whole. It gives a two sided leadership spectrum that people can understand and follow when viewing from either side. However, it is displayed in many situations that extroverts get more attention simply because they are the voices and doers at any given moment. However, on the other side of the spectrum, “Introverts earn their respect through their actions and what they stand for rather than speaking . . . introverts provide a different style of leadership one that is more demanding.” Stated by David L. Remund in “Introverts in an Extroverted Profession”. We live in a nation where extroverts are in charge which is not a negative factor, it does however take acknowledgment away from the introverts who contributed an equal amount of work.
