In today’s society, young children are frequently encouraged to be social and outgoing, and quiet kids are less prized than their talkative peers. Susan Cain, the author of the bestselling book ‘Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking,’ mentions her experience of a summer camp when she was nine at the beginning of her TED speech. Her mother prepared her some books to read during the camp, and she says that it was so natural for her, because reading books was the most popular group activity in her family and it was their way of being ‘social.’ Her family members could enjoy being with their loved ones, as well as roaming around their own thoughts at the same time. So she expected to be with other girls reading books …show more content…
I am very shy when I meet new people and do not like being on stage. Also, I prefer less people around me and get very stressed out when there are a lot of strangers, such as places like Myeong-dong or Everland. Thus, I have always thought of myself as a definite introvert, and many people have advised me that I should try to ‘go out of my shell.’ Still, Cain delivers that introverted personality has its own strengths and needs to be valued in a different way as extroverts are treated. She says she has been an introvert herself who likes to stay home on New Year’s Eve and who has never given a media interview for 43 years of her life. In The New York Times article ‘An introvert steps out’, she tells her story of how a typical introverted writer delivered the rousing speech. Accordingly, I would like to help more people better understand about introverted people who roughly take up one third of the population and find out their own advantages, ultimately for the benefit of both the introverts and extroverts, and for the harmonious society.
First of all, there should be an explanation on what is exactly ‘introvert’ and ‘extrovert.’ According to Susan Cain, an introvert does not always mean being ‘shy.’ Many introverts tend to be shy, but there are also introverts who are not shy. To be specific, shyness is related to the fear about social judgments. So when you’re on a blind date or at a party you might be too worried about what other people think of

Like many people, I fear rejection when I interact with peers; but while many extroverts tend to over-compensate for this by turning to humor, sarcasm, or just talking a lot, I tend to compensate with silence and body language that does not invite probing. Greg Baker described the results of my introverted tendencies well: "When you don't get involved in other people's lives they will assume that you want to be left alone... You, in turn, get upset because you think that people don't like you (Baker 8). This fear of what people will think of me is pride, and it is easy to…

Casa by Judith Cofer, similar to the first two pieces of work, has a theme of pride in one’s individuality. James Howe’s novel, which I am reminded of through the story Casa, helped me change from a kid that was ashamed of his quiet personality to one that embraces his introversion. For many years before reading this book, I always saw myself as an outcast. For the longest time, I was always that smart kid that never talks.…

With her already having arguments from a past MUN conference and me in charge of the hot seat questions and concluding statement, we completely demolished the opposing side (or we’d like to think so at least) and even earned some extra credit points for our fancy attire. Despite this happy ending, it still bothered me that my quietness was perceived as a negative trait, even though it clearly had no effect our success in the end. In fact, the belief that being reserved is a weakness extends well beyond my single experience. Just look at the clichés found in film and literature today: the shy, clumsy girl at work is just waiting to be coaxed out of her awkward shell, and the lone, introverted protagonist ends his story with a larger circle of friends and transforms into a “better” character by becoming a social butterfly—which according to media, translates to being more interesting.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…
