My first experience intermingling with my community was in my 7th grade year when I volunteered to perform a solo piece on the violin at the Delta Sigma Theta's “Jabbowock” Scholarship Pageant. The program provided me with the experience of celebrating the beauty and accomplishments of fellow young, African-American women. The pageant was a magnificent display of the appreciation of youth, and I am thankful I was able to participate. My passion for the violin has also granted me the experience to play at church events as well. Partaking in the student council organization has allowed for personal and leadership growth, and is comprised of plentiful downfalls and successes. But I believe that it requires missteps and prosperity to learn and grow as a leader. In terms of strength, my skills in proper and adequate delegation tasks have contributed to the successes of my class. However, delegating and simply telling others what to do is not leadership, it is the act of collaborating with one another to execute an event or achieve the goal. Ultimately, I believe that it is my ability to uplift and empower others as my greatest asset.…

I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. My leadership experiences are one of the most important aspects of my life because being able to contribute to a meaningful cause, as I did with Operation Smile and Wounded Warrior Project, is extraordinarily empowering and essential for character development. Additionally, my leadership experiences were ways of giving back to the community that nurtured me. Participating in Model UN and being a student leader at my church helped me to develop a sense of pride in my own voice, which is something that I hope to impart to others in my community. Cultivating tomorrow’s leaders begins with developing confidence in oneself, which I would always strive towards as a member of the National Honor…

As I reflect on my leadership journey, I think that I have made slow, gradual progress, but progress nonetheless. When I was little, I tended to deliberately blend into the background and have others do things for me. Then, as I got older, took on new responsibilities, and developed my passions and interests, I started to also develop my leadership skills. Today, I am still a quiet, timid person, but I am working on stepping out of my comfort zone. Ever since I was little, I have always been a sort of wall flower.…
