Chapter 28 in The Norton Introduction to Literature talks about the elements of an essay. An essay is a short written assignment that develops and supports and idea that the essay is written about. Each essay has a reason for being written. Essays about arguments are meant to convince someone of their view point, while an essay about analysis is supposed to breakdown and explain something to the reader. Essays should include four things: a thesis, structure, evidence, and tone. Including all four in a well thought out essay will help the reader understand what it is you are righting about. Chapter 28 talks about tone. The topic of the essay or what you write about should shape the tone of the writing. The tone of the paper will determine the responses of the readers as well as setting the pace for the essay. When you write your essays, you aren’t supposed to have your professor in mind. When you write something, you are supposed to think of your audience as your peers. Even though your writing should have a tone set for your peers, you should still keep your professor or instructor in mind.
