Alcatraz prison, one of the most heard of and spoken about prisons. It has been on the news, in newspapers, in movies, and even as a setting for video games. Having seen and heard so much about it, I thought to research and try to understand, why it’s so infamous and what makes it so special.

So where is the Alcatraz prison exactly? It is located in San Francisco, California, USA. On the island of Alcatraz or also known as The Rock. The island did not originally serve as a federal prison. The Rock served as a federal prison from 1934-1963 to house the most difficult or very dangerous criminals that could not be kept in other prisons. The Alcatraz complex included an industrial building, a power station, a laundry, a recreation yard, a recreation hall, a lighthouse, a warden house, an officer’s club, officer apartments, an electric shop, residential family cottages, building 64, and a boat dock. The prison had a maximum capacity of 450 prisoners. The main cell house held 600 cells. Most prisoners occupied the 336 cells in blocks B and C. Each prisoner had his own cell, the cell was five feet by nine feet, big enough for a sleeping cot, a toilet, and a sink. Cells in blocks A and D were used for solitary confinement and segregation. There were thirty-six segregation cells and 6 solitary confinement cells. Prisoners in cells of block D were only let out once a week to visit the recreation yard. Below block A was the Spanish dungeon which was rarely used.
