Introducing Salicylic Acid into and Organic Compound

Purpose

The purpose of this experiment is to perform acetylation of salicylic acid. According to Ervy et al. (2010).“Salicylic acid is both a phenol and an aromatic carboxylic acid” (Introduction section, para. 2.). Once the experiment is performed a TLC, melting point, and percent yield will be determined and calculated. The product will also be analyzed via IR spectra and NMR.

Experimental

Salicylic acid (1.507g), which was a white powder substance was measured and poured into a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask. Acetic anhydride (3mL) was slowly added to the flask in addition to 3 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid (a clear liquid). The

After, the solution was cooled in an ice water bath. Once crystals formed, the solution was filtered using a funnel. The product was then recrystallized from 95% ethanol and water. In order to do this, the amount of ethanol used was multiplied by 0.8 and the calculated amount was the amount of water used for the recrystallization process. The dried purified product was weighed and the percent yield was calculated.…

Exp D. Post Lab Questions 1. What is the purpose of the concentrated sulfuric acid in the first step? The purpose of using concentrated sulfuric acid is to activate the reaction of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride and produce the acetylsalicylic acid, which is aspirin. The sulfuric acid is used to protonate oxygen atom of a carbonyl group of salicylic acid.…

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to establish a concrete understanding of limiting reagents and percent yields. In addition, the lab should give the administrator the ability to analyze the effects of reactants on the product of a chemical reaction. Procedure: In part A of the lab, the first step in the procedure is to add 20 mL, and 25 mL of CaCl2 to two different flasks.…

First, the contaminants during the transition steps of the experiment appear in the final product. These contaminants in starting materials could appear and cause the melting point of the product to have a larger range. Second, during purification measures, such as recrystallization and filtration, these steps may not go to competition leaving behind some of the undesired experiment materials. Third, there are several side reactions that occur between the p-aminophenol and acetic anhydride. These side reactions produce substances other than the desired product.…

Task 3 P1 When using thin layer chromatography (TLC) to test for purity of aspirin it is a quick and simple method. Firstly when using the TLC method you need to have a TLC sheet and mark on the sheet 0.5cm up on the sheet and draw a line, make sure you don’t press too hard on the paper as this will disrupt the absorbent on the paper. You need to make sure the samples have been marked on the paper so you don’t get mixed up and leave a gap between the aspirin samples so they don’t run together as this will give an inaccurate result. Next get a 1% concentrated sample of a known purity of salicylic acid as this is suitable for the TLC analysis, then obtain a small glass rod (micro capillary) and use this to dip in the solution and on to the paper in the position where the sample of aspirin is named.…

3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid was added to the purified ester along with concentrated sulfuric acid and refluxed to dissolve the 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid. After the solution was refluxed, the solution was cooled and mixed with ether. The desired products were separated with the use of sodium carbonate and water, before being dried and filtered. The ether was then removed by being placed under reduced pressure. After the removal of the ether, the products remained as an oily residue.…

Purpose The question being explored in this experiment is how temperature affects the rate of reaction of Alka-Seltzer, or effervescent tablets. The purpose of this is to see whether hotter temperatures or cooler temperatures cause the reaction to be quicker. Effervescent tablets are used to orally distribute medicine for patients and consumers (Laboratories SMB). By adding the tablets to water, the medicine is released into the solution, allowing the consumer to easily drink the solution and take the drugs needed for their health (Haack & Köberle).…

The purpose of lab 6 was understand how to design a synthesis based on functional group interconversions in order to go from one compound to another despite having different functional groups, yet same basic skeleton. Thus, students hydrolyzed methyl salicylate (C8H8O3) to create salicylic acid (C7H6O3). For the second part of the lab (lab 7), students acetylated the phenolic hydroxyl group of salicylic acid in order to again demonstrate the same concept as lab 6. For both labs, students worked in groups of four and tasks were divided among group members.…

Late Autumn, 1942 Today is my birthday, which is nothing I desire to celebrate, at least not without my friends. I find myself walking outside, wallowing in my own sadness, and I sit down on the bench in front of my house, and this is when I realize how peaceful the skies have become. Once the hazy skies filled with loud roars of fighter planes have ceased, now it's eerily silent. Only left with the amicable evening and the boisterous choir of the crickets playing the most melancholy melody I have ever heard.…

Materials and Methods The transition temperature of sodium sulphate decahydrate was determined by allowing 5.01g of solid crystals to melt at a temperature of 50 ⁰C. The substance was allowed to cool and the temperature monitored until a constant temperature was reached. A plot of temperature versus time allowed the transition temperature to be determined. The water equivalent of the calorimeter was determined using distilled water.…

The expected outcome was achieved. 3.68 g of aspirin was produced as a result of the reaction. Also the test to trace salicylic acid showed there was much less salicylic acid in the aspirin because the color was more faint when compared with the dark purple of the pure salicylic acid test tube.…
