Public Issue:
A public issue occurs when the system itself causes a problem or hardship that someone may face. Individuals tend to view public issues as personal problems which causes them to believe the reason they are not able to do something as an individual failure instead of a structural problem. An example of a public issue that I have experienced is that I had to take a year off from attending school. I took a year off from school so I could have money to support myself. Social Control:
Social control is the attempt to keep the majority of people, the ones in lower classes, compliant and obedient to the rules and regulations of a society or certain group of people. Social control is broken up into two different types of control; formal and informal. Formal control is the enforcement of rules by the government or higher ranking groups preventing the society as a whole from doing something they deem unacceptable. Informal control is the enforcement of an individual's personal or cultural values based on the society's belief of how things should be. People in higher social classes and positions prefer the use of formal control because it allows them to maintain their money and power over others. An example of formal and informal control that I have experienced concerns smoking cigarettes. I am now unable to smoke in almost all public locations, even outdoor ones. The formal control is much more minimal in comparison because they are only increasing taxes on tobacco that makes the cigarettes less accessible. The informal control is that the University of Southern Maine and
Settlers Green Outlet Mall in New Hampshire, does not allow any smoking on their property
