Intrinsic Motivation And Extrinsic Motivation Essay
Intrinsic motivation is motivation based on internal factors such as self-determination (pg. 371). Extrinsic motivation is motivation based on external incentives such as rewards and punishment, like money or phone getting taken away (pg. 371). In the book it discusses the positive and negative factors of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation seems to have a positive link with grades and standardized test scores. Extrinsic motivation was negatively related to achievement outcomes. Students also revealed that framing goals extrinsically was related to a lower level of independency and lower persistence on achievements tasks. It seems that if students are taught to find motivation through personal and inner satisfaction students are more likely to be successful alchemically and develop a strong independency.
2. Describe mastery-, helpless-, and performance-orientations.
We all find self-motivation in different ways, the book describes two ways that adolescents reflected cognitive engagement and self-motivation through mastery orientation and performance orientation.
