Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is one of the specific procedure of radiation therapy that deliver a very high dose (9-25 Gy) to the tumor bed during the surgical procedure. In IORT irradiation before surgery to shrink the tumor volume and exposure to tumor bed after surgery to ensure the destruction of microscopic tumor cells. The use of IORT has increased because single high doses of radiation therapy can be delivered to a tumor volume in appropriate clinical situations without producing significant normal tissue morbidity [1-3]. IORT includes three basic techniques: Intraoperative Electron-Beam Radiation Therapy (IOERT), Intraoperative X-Ray Radiation Therapy (IOXRT or Low-KV) and Intraoperative High-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy (IOHDR) …show more content…
These Applicators in the treatment of areas with complex anatomical location of the tumor bed such as abdominal tumors or skin sarcomas faced with fields matching problems, because the size of cylindrical applicators with circular section aren’t adequate for covering large areas. To resolve this problem and covered entire areas usually used multiple circular fields, but the circular section makes overlap in treatment area (hotspot) or Cause not cover the radiation field (coldspot). To overcome these problems require applicators with rectangular or square fields to arrangement their fields to fit all area of tumor bed and deliver uniform dose distribution. One of the applicators used for this purpose is Beam Shaper applicator. Beam Shaper using a thick blades capable of producing squares and rectangles field with various sizes. This applicator with a continues regulation of the rectangular fields not only providing a proper treatment for full coverage of large tumors, but also preventing Straight exposure to healthy tissue and organs at risk in the around of tumor bed due to the weakening of the electron beam inside the
