He sets the storyline of the book with him reaching the summit of Everest where he states “My watch read 1:17 p.m. All told, I’d spent less than five minutes on the roof of the world” (Krakauer 6). This was something I enjoyed about the book because it was intriguing, and made readers want to continue on. As the first few chapters progresses, Krakauer explains the overall history of Everest. He mentions some of the first expeditions as well as particular deaths of climbers that attempted to reach the summit. Included in the novel is also the successful summit of Everest accomplished by Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld. This was significant because this made Krakauer want to become a climber as a child where he describes the summit as “...a subsequent ascent of the mountain helped establish the trajectory of my life” (Krakauer 19).
