Into The Woods Play Analysis

College of Charleston’s production of Into the Woods by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim was a joy to watch. This play uses familiar fairy tales and strings them all together with a central storyline. Todd McNerney, the director, creates an atmosphere that brings the inner child out of adults and serves as quality entertainment for kids. This production offers great music, acting, and design; which are paired with a great script and music from Lapine and Sondheim. Even though the play had numerous strengths, it also has its share of weaknesses. The music was this production’s greatest strength. The orchestra was beautifully synchronized with the action happening on the stage. The scene's transitions flowed smoother due to the excellent transition …show more content…
Each cast member, with an exception of Rapunzel, had great chemistry with each other. They had great comedic timing which helped enhance the entertainment value of the script. Haydn Haring, the witch, stood out from the rest of the actors. Haring had the best comedic timing and took over every scene that she was in. Her energy resulted in strong musical numbers and a very memorable performance. Every time that Haring was on stage, it made the play more entertaining. On the contrary to Haring, Jessica Shamble, Rapunzel induced irritation every time she was onstage. I was happy when she got squashed by the mourning giant. The cast did an excellent job when acting in character; they were cast perfectly for their own respective …show more content…
Except for one or two minor changes to the set, it was the same set even for different locations. A static set might give off a feeling of disbelief as the characters are supposed to be in a different location, but the set around them is the same every time. However, with the help of lights it was easier to believe that they were in a different location. The set was not the prettiest thing ever, but it served its purpose of being a canvas for the story to be told on. The dark color scheme for the set made it look like the woods. Overall, the set was not one of the stronger aspects of this play. Even though the set design was mediocre, the use of stage-space was excellent. A big part of the stage was left inaccessible by the characters as it was occupied by the orchestra. This left the actors with very little stage-space to work with. However, because of the efficient use of stage-space, the stage seemed twice its actual size. No corner of the stage was left untouched and every part of the stage was evenly

Henrietta Leavitt was played by Katie Piper, Margaret Leavitt was played by Sarah Lambert, Peter Shaw was played by Morgan Gates, Annie Cannon was played by Julia Whalen, and Williamina Fleming was played by Beth Ryan. All of the actors were convincing of the roles they played, and I didn’t dislike any of the actors. Having to choose one favorite actor or character from this play is very difficult, but my favorite actor would be Ms. Ryan, who played the character Williamina Fleming. She was my favorite actor because she portrayed her character the best and she was convincing of her part in the play. I liked that she had a very comical part in the play too.…

Imagine being given the opportunity to fill in the role of a brilliant and famous actor such as Audrey Hepburn. Fortunately for past Disney star Vanessa Hudgens, this dream of starring in a Broadway show has become a reality. This past week I had the privilege to go to New York and see the Broadway revival of Gigi. Gigi is originally based on the novella titled Gigi by Collete. The novella then turned into a major motion picture before hitting the Broadway stage in 1951 starring Audrey Hepburn as the title role.…

Into the Woods is basically the stories of Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack & The Beans Stalk combined, the production of Into the Woods tells a quirky story of a journey into the trees, where hopefully they will all be back before dark. it was an incredible play even though there were things in the play that were not in the movie like Rapunzel getting her eyes gouged out. It was an emotional play for me and I did not cry when Simba was standing over Mufasa's body after Uncle Scar threw him down the cliff. The Actors made very good eye contact with the audience…

For example, Benjamin’s performance was astounding because of the gestures and the British accent he used sold to the audience that he was in fact an autistic British teen. Also, Elena who played Siobhan who was Christopher’s teacher and the narrator of the story was effective in displaying her sympathy for Christopher. However, Gene Gillette which was good didn’t meet up to the standards of the rest of the main characters because his accent just wasn’t believable mainly because he spoke in a monotone throughout the play. Lastly, Felicity’s performance was also quite good in the way she could sound and look like a worried mother in the way she consoled as well as spoke to…

    Play Critique Essay

As a person who has only attened two other plays in their life, people might call me “unqualified” to review a play; these people are wrong. My qualifications for play review come solely from an “excess” amount of musicals listened to, pirated videos, and animatics watched on youtube. Seeing Guys and Dolls live was a great experience as a whole, and I enjoyed myself throughly. Understandably there were a few things that I disagreed with, so I will nitpick and pretend that my qualifications alone make me justified to critique a play that no doubt took alot of effort, stress, and love to make.…

Origins of Love There were different scenes presented and different props used to make a better picture to the audience what and how those scenes should be perceived. The scenes almost the same idea but in different methods to make it easier for individuals to be involved in the scene based on their own experience that they might have had. The colors of the stage were effective especially with the different light colors and costumes of actors. The sounds of the music and actors differed a lot from a scene to another and the music they played in some dramatic scenes also was effective. The scenes were more believable than they are on a screen because we can see the people presenting physically.…

The musical Into the Woods, by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book) is a compilation of fairytales with a unique twist of life’s hard lessons after getting what you “wished” for. The play’s main story line is composed of well-known fairytales such as: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack and the bean stock. These fairytales are all intertwined in order to help the protagonist (the baker) collect all the ingredients the witch has asked for in order for him and his wife to have a baby. The play is a metaphor for the different paths a person may take when opportunities unfold.…
