Some would say he had everything a young man could ask for in good health, education, loving family and a roof over his head. He never needed any kind of material things to make him feel content or fulfilled in life. The good things people would consider him to have may have been a nuisance to him. In the Journal of Religion and Health, “Call of the Wild: The Negative Tendency in the Nature Religions of American Youth”, Joseph Kramp states, “Like Krakauer, I agree that challenging family circumstances are among the motivations that drive these seekers into the wild” (9). He felt his parents may have been holding him back. His father lived a double life for quite sometime. While his father was with Chris’ mom Billie he also was still married to another woman. His Dad had another kid while he was he was with this other woman. When McCandless found out about this he was devastated. His parents also had many fights in the household about things ranging from work to personal issues. Billie even had took Chris and his sister Carine several times to look for a new house thus indicating she was not happy in the marriage and planned on leaving him. She never left Walt though. Chris knew at that point he did not want to end up like his parents. He seem to despise his parents and was disgusted with them. He left one day on his own terms. Society is constantly trying to influence us to live a certain way. Fearful to break out of your shell and do what you really wanna do many individuals follow a cookie cutter life. Whatever you may feel deep inside that you are passionate about you should not hesitate to do it. Chris and Jon did exactly that. As Chris says, “I fear you will follow this same inclination in the future and thus fail to discover all the wonderful things that God has placed around us to discover. Don’t settle down and sit in one place. Move around, be nomadic, make each day a new horizon” (pg 57 paragraph 1) Even though Chris did not live to tell his story, Jon told his story beautifully and it inspired many people. Chris McCandless died a happy man. He achieved that by living his truth and marching to the beat of his own drum. To Chris, marching to the beat of his own drum was living a life that he was happy and proud
