Chris Mccandless Courage

Courage can be defined as having the ability to do something that frightens you, something beyond your comfort threshold. Chris McCandless and Cheryl Strayed both had the courage to take off into the unknown – the wild. They both had a clear view of what they wanted or needed from life, and unlike most people, they went out there to retrieve the happiness they both desired. “Into the Wild” and “Wild” are both stories about young adults who set out on a journey to discover something, but what is each trying to discover? “Into the wild” is about Chris McCandless, a talented young man from a good family who turns his back on everything, to travel to Alaska. If Chris was properly prepared for his journey he may have be able to survive, rather than dying of starvation. He traveled with cheap hiking boots, a bag of rice, and minimal clothing for the types of conditions that he would be encountering. His need for independence and his “do it all myself” attitude is also a contributing factor to his death. People that Chris met along way would offer advice to help him reach his destination and he refused to take any help given to him. He walked into the wild under prepared and paid for it with his life. He finally realizes that we do need people to be happy, not just nature or inanimate objects, he was able to discover this on his own. Although Cheryl’s journey was less treacherous as Chris’s she prepared herself more for the travel. She packed herself a backpack of everything she needed to help her reach the final destination. Although Cheryl was not mentally and physically prepared for the hike, when she felt like giving up she found the strength to keep going. Even at her lowest points when she was left without shows, water, or company, she continued to hike knowing that there was a purpose in her actions. She learned the value of never giving up and pushing through to the
