The drivers that would pick up McCandless could tell right away how unready he was for his intended journey. The first man to offer him a ride, Jim Gallein, noticed how young he was and his lack of needed supplies and recommended Chris accepts some of his things. “He wasn’t carrying anywhere near as much food and gear as you’d expect a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip.”(pg. four) Chris had a sparse amount of food and equipment, Gallein did not think McCandless would last very long out in the wild.
