Both Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer and “To Build a Fire” by Jack London contain ironically similar deaths of their main characters both lonely and in brutal environments. Into the Wild focuses on the life of Christopher McCandless; a graduate of Emory University and gifted athlete who has the irresistible urge to make it to the Alaskan frontier. Comparably, “To Build a Fire” centers around the unnamed main character who explores the Yukon in the extreme cold. When McCandless arrives to his destination, he drifts off of the main trail and is forced to venture alone to find his way; likewise, London’s character goes off of the main trail purposefully. Into the Wild and “To Build a Fire” are similar in the thought processes of the main characters;

    Into the Wild vs Walden Into the Wild, a book about a man who ran away from childhood problems and decided to walk into the wilderness by himself after getting rid of all of his materialistic items including his car and money, and Walden, a book about a man who fled towards simplicity and solitude to understand what life was really about, are two incredible books. The stories are timeless and will likely still be talked about in fifty years. The protagonists, Thoreau and Chris, shared many similarities and differences. The novel, Into the Wild, written by Jon Krakauer, is a riveting, cautionary tale about the death of Chris McCandless, a young man who embarks on a journey to Alaska to seek the truth of happiness through the solitude of nature and free himself from the constraints of society. No doubt, the ongoing theme throughout Krakauer’s novel is the dysfunctional father-son relationship between Chris and his dad. In fact, McCandless died before he had the chance to grow out of his anger. Into the Wild examines the fatal expedition of Chris McCandless as he breaks all ties from society and challenges his ability to survive in the wilderness. Through the use of primary sources, situational irony, and syntax, Krakauer thoroughly captures the compelling tragedy of Chris McCandless.…

For Christopher McCandless and Jon Krakauer, this was their reality for some time. While McCandless is now silenced in the snow of the Alaskan bush, Krakauer continues to explain what happened to McCandless, why they left society, and why the young people of today should follow their own dreams. Through the use of flowing description, well-held ethos, and simple sentence structure, Krakauer unravels the complexity of Christopher McCandless. Only by the use of attentive description could Krakauer illustrate the formational…

    Chris McCandless died alone in the Alaskan wild while living completely off of the land. “Some readers admired the boy immensely for his courage and noble ideals:” while “: others fulminated that he was a reckless idiot, a wacko, a narcissist who perished out of arrogance and stupidity-and was undeserving of the considerable media attention he received” (Krakauer xi). These quotes represent the feelings of many who read Into The Wild, but most people ignore the important aspects of Chris McCandless’ personality and his self imposed purpose. McCandless was a kind, intelligent and free-spirited young man who may not have been completely prepared for his journey, he was able to accept death in the end, knowing that he lived a life that too…

Thoreau was most known for his transcendental experiences he wrote of in Walden. Henry Ticknor once said that “individuals have used the wilderness as a metaphor for life’s vicissitudes”, and many since Thoreau have sought out their own “spiritual rebirths” in nature (Ticknor 3).Chris McCandless was one who attempted to relive Thoreau’s exploits, but for as much as nature deals life it also deals death.
