McCandless shares Thoreau’s thoughts. In the following quote, he refers to Thoreau`s declaration “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience”. “I heartily accept the motto – ‘That government is best which governs least”’ (qtd. in Krakauer 173). This argument shows that a non-ruled government would be the best for the protagonist. In addition to that, Chris wants to have more freedom. He feels a lack of the free will.

Those two authors belonged to the literary and philosophical movement called Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is defined as a movement, which implicated a new way of think concerning relationships towards nature, society, and the progress of the own personality. The central aspect was the individuality of each person (Wayne viii). The development of this movement started in New England in the early 19th century and it based on the concept of Emanuel Kant (Transcendentalism). “The very word “transcend” connotes moving beyond some stultifying condition of mind or body” (Rahn). “(Especially in Transcendentalism) a divine spirit supposed to pervade the universe and to encompass all human souls” (Transcendentalism). Transcendentalists, “[…] emphasizing instead ‘self-reliance’ and self-expression as their primary values (Wayne viii).” “The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried” (Emerson). According to my point view, Emerson’s quote and all the quotes in this paragraph reflect very clearly McCandless’s motivation for doing his journey.
