The movie begins with Miss Jane Pittman birthday party. A young man asked to speak with her so they stepped outside. The man told her his idea to send a girl to drink from white folks drinking fountain. She thinks it is a ridiculous idea. The young man stuck to his idea and carried on with it. His idea backfired and many people were arrested but not injured. After that young African American man spoke to Jane another young American man can to ask her about the time of when she was a slave. She tells him a very important flashback to her. The flashback starts with her treating many men to some water. She meets a man named Corporal Luis Brown. In that percent of slaves, the men killed the only mother figure Jane had in her life. Because of this her and a little boy were left to find a place on their own. They decided to head toward Ohio. On their journey, they ran into a man that asked if they needed a ride. He ended up leaving them next to an enormous river, but hey didn't get anything out of that place. They continued walking for miles. The movie skips to when she was in her 20's. She was having a peaceful day at school until a group of men with white masks barged in and killed a man in front of her face and burned the school down. The men returned again and asked for her son. She said she didn't know him. After they left Jane asked her son to leave and be safe so he did as he was told. After a whole year of not speaking to her own son, Jane found someone else to talk to, Joe Pippin. Soon after meeting her soulmate they decided to leave their current home to find another place, but they couldn't because they owed their master $50.00.
