Intimate Partner Abuse

Decent Essays
The topic that impacted me the most would have to be intimate partner violence and abuse from chapter 14 on domestic violence and other family health issues. This topic had an impact on me the most because it is something that happens all the time. We just can’t see it or don’t know the signs that it is happening. Intimate partner violence is when abuse occurs between two people that are in a close relationship. There are three different types of violence the first is physical abuse this is when a partner is threatening, trying to hurt, or is hurting the other person by physical force. Then there is sexual abuse where one partner is threatening or forcing the other partner into sex. Lastly, is emotional abuse which is when one has aggressive

The two topics that resonated with me were Micro-aggression and the privilege statements. The statements made me realize that we take certain things that are so “normal” for granted. Simple privileges that I take for granted do not have to worry about where my next meal is coming from and that I press the handicapped button to open the door because it’s convenient. Like most of us college students that live on campus we have a meal plan but what about if you live off campus or simply aren’t in school at all? I never think about the individuals that aren’t in the same predicament as me.…

Intimate partner violence cast such a large net over our society. This is what struck by most in the power and control documentary and the Ted Talk. Intimate partner violence cuts across all backgrounds and seriocomic classes and can affect anyone no matter their status. The aspect of both the Ted Talk and the documentary I found most striking was how almost all intimate partner violence fallows the same pattern from the background of the abuser to the tactics of power and control they employ which then cycle back to impacting their children. In both the documentary and the Ted talk the background of the abusers seemed to be very similar.…

I believe Intimate Partner Abuse (IPA) or Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) should be looked at by a case by case basis. So many different factors play a part in each separate situation. For this reason, it is hard to choose either or mandatory victim cooperation or victim control. One factor the book describes would be the difference in behaviors of men that are arrested depending on education, employment, marital status and societal standards. Only employed, well-educated and married men or shaken and deterred by being arrested.…

The topic that I found to be the most interesting was hard determinism. Similar to libertarianism, hard determinism states that casual determinism and free will are incompatible. According to determinism, there is no such thing as free will. It states that a person’s actions are the effects of their will. A person’s will comes from their desires, motives, and emotions.…

The most helpful thing I learned so far in health class is to keep good relationships and point out signs abuse so that I am aware of the situation. In the past I had friends that would use me to do things for them and bad things to others, now I know how to point signs of relationship abuse out and prevent this type of abuse from happening again. I will be able to use this information in the future by pointing out when I see signs of unhealthy behavior from people around me, and confront the person so that I don’t have to be in a situation similar to the one I was in a couple years ago.…

Sexual, Physical and Verbal abuse have devastating long-term effects on children and their development. Child abuse causes higher rates of depression, an increase in the likelihood of developing an addiction as well as socioeconomic consequences later in life. Relatively little research has been carried out specifically for sufferers of emotional abuse. Most studies consider domestic violence as a whole. This is to be expected as surveys reveal that psychological abuse usually precedes physical aggression. Overall, women are more likely to be abused than men. However, victims can be of any age, gender or ethnicity and in same-sex or heterosexual relationships.…

About four years ago, I got caught up in a abusive relationship with a guy which mistreated me almost everyday; when I say mistreat I mean beating me till I cried or, hitting me across the head due to guys looking or saying “hello” to me. This guy did not only make me feel unwanted but he made me feel useless. He made me feel guilty for speaking up or not speaking up, for being emotional. I started blaming myself for our problems until I realized it was not me. For those hurtful, emotional, heart breaking times, I finally made the choice to remove myself from him and not only love from afar, but to forgive and forget his hurtful actions towards me.…

Before going into the signs of an abusive relationship, how to avoid one, and getting out of an abusive relationship, one must know what abuse is. According to Mark Rafenstein there are four types of abuse. The first one Rafenstein touches on is physical abuse, he states “it can include pushing, grabbing, scratching, or anything else that hurts your body” (Rafenstein 2001, Para. 4). According to “The National Domestic Violence Hotline” on average, twenty four people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking an intimate partner in the United States”. That statistic is terrible not only females are being abused, but their families, and friends are involved.…
