A stressor is a transition that impacts the family unit and changes the family system, it can be positive or negative (Price). Normative stressors are anticipated events that occur in all families that are considered to be short-term rather than chronic (Price). Examples of normative stressors are getting married or the birth of a child (Price). Non-normative stressors can be potentially threatening situations that impact the family unit such as natural disasters, family violence, and divorce (Price). It states a there is a period of imbalance that results in three possible outcomes. The possible outcomes are recovering to the previous level of functioning, bon-adaptation or enhancement in the family’s functioning in comparison to the previous level above before the crisis occurred, and maladaptation which is a decline in the family’s functioning (Price). A family that finds that recovery difficult may find that they are dealing with new crises before repairs can be made on the initial crisis (Price). Theorists that have expanded on the ABC-X model have referred to this as pile-up where new crises situations arise further reduce a family’s ability to cope and function (Price).
Family Crisis The triggering event that led to a crisis in the Alvarenga family was the divorce between Edward and Rochelle. After the divorce, James and Crystal stayed living with their mother Rochelle in the same apartment. Their father Edward picked them up every other weekend. Edward and Rochelle’s relationship was extremely distant and they avoided each other when possible and communicated only when it was absolutely necessary. In addition, within a year of the divorce Rochelle’s parents, two brothers, and sister moved from out from apartments where they were neighbors as they purchased homes in different communities.
