Personal Reflection On Interview Skills

When interviewing for a job opportunity, many individuals experience anxiety and stress during the process. From personal experience, I can admit that I do not retain the greatest interview skills - I shake uncontrollably, I demonstrate high anxiety levels, and I find it challenging to think on the spot. For me, the questions, themselves, do not represent the stressor, but rather, the stress comes from knowing that the individual in front of me retains the ability to control my future career. Interviews exemplify an all-or-nothing situation - you either get the job or you do not. This past week, I participated in a mock interview role-play in class, which permitted me to evaluate and test my interview skills with peers. While it did come with …show more content…
In a real interview, most interviewees do not receive feedback throughout the process; rather they simply get informed whether or not they got the position. In the role-play, my peers asked me questions, and I answered to the best of my ability. Based on my responses, my peers informed me on what went well and what aspects of the interview I could improve on. The role-play did not act as an assessment, but rather as a learning experience, allowing me to receive constructive feedback. My group discussed a variety of questions that we have been asked in past interviews and how we each responded to the question. With this experience, I altered my responses, including diverse aspects of my peer 's feedback. Prior to this mock interview, I never knew how well I answered interview questions or where improvement needed to occur. An aspect of my character that I did not perceive as a strength, until this mock interview role play, stood as my integrity. My group discussed how honesty stands critical in a job interview. It does not benefit an interviewee to deceive the interviewer, as it creates a forged image. While it does stand essential to make yourself sound like a respectable candidate, lying to better your chances of acquiring the position does not symbolize integrity. Interviewers will respect honesty over appeal. Dishonesty will not only ruin your reputation, but it will always come back to haunt you. Imagine that an interviewer hires you based on your fabricated skills, and when you begin the position, it remains bluntly evident that you cannot do the skills you claimed. No matter the situation, or job position, an interviewer would rather hire an honest individual over an individual who expresses sugarcoated lies.
Despite the numerous benefits that a mock interview role-play tenders, it can never replicate a real interview. An individual who succeeds at interviews does not rely on answer memorization, but rather succeeds through his or her ability to think promptly, demonstrate confidence, and exhibit their abilities. An individual acquires these skills from continuous practice, such as mock interview role-play.
