Prior to this interview, I assumed that my manager Kevin G. Li had a different background. In the past few months that I have been working with him, I have been in a position to understand him and get to know him a bit better. This interview was not only eye opening for me, but also for him. While explaining some of his life details, he realized that some things he was not aware of himself. Kevin 's family migrated from China to California, before he was born. He became the 1st generation Chinese-American in his family. He grew up in San Fransisco, California, with his parents, grandparents, and sister. The entire family lived in a 2 bedroom apartment in a Chinese neighborhood near Chinatown. His family struggled for years, trying to get …show more content…
Learning that his family migrated to America to achieve a better life was interesting to me. However, it is unfortunate that he does not know much about his Chinese heritage. I am grateful for knowing where my roots come from and knowing the different experiences my parents experienced coming here. Having him discuss the struggles his parents experienced trying to get by on whatever they could afford brought me to realization, that I 'm lucky to have been born when my parents were established and had integrated into the middle-class society. I now see how his family 's struggles and his personal struggles made him stronger in life. He described his family living in a small apartment, but he said that they were never close with each other. He felt like they were all roommates at one point. I was not surprised by this finding because, in my Systems Theories and the Family class, we learned that if both parents are absent from a child 's life and there are no other adults to take care of them, the child is forced to act as an adult and becomes independent enough to take care of themselves. In his case, he had an older sister that became somewhat of a "surrogate mother" to him. Both of them learned how to cook and clean. To ensure that they lived in a well-kept household. Even though I do not come from this type of household, my parents taught me to become self-efficient; to be able to clean and cook. When discussing the rest of his family, I felt that he was indifferent towards his parents and grandparents. It was like he did not care for his family, except for his sister. At some point during the interview, I decided to ask him about how he came out to his family and when he realized he was gay. Asking this question, I realized it made me feel

In today’s society, most schools, both elementary and secondary, don’t discuss Asian or even Asian American History. African American, Native American and even European histories are all extensively covered in history classes. Many students have at least some knowledge of African American slavery, forced cultural assimilation of Native Americans, and the civil rights movement. From an early age, children are taught that the U.S. is a country created by immigrants; however, American history classes have shown a trend of teaching that excludes Asian Americans from the history of this country. At most, the topic of Asian American history is lightly touched, only introducing San Francisco Chinatowns or the large influx of Asian immigrants looking…
