Interview With My Cousin Max

Decent Essays
When I heard about the interview assignment I knew exactly who to interview and that person was my cousin Max. I have always looked up and admired him as a person and a student. Going into this interview I thought I knew everything about him and his college career, but I was wrong. Max made me realize that even though college can be intimidating, it is still the best experience I will go through. He also shared tons of extremely useful advice for the years ahead of me. Overall this interview with my cousin was enlighten and taught me that even if I miss up, I will be okay. Max attended Orange Coast College from 2006 until 2011. When he shared this with me I was very shocked partly because I did not think you could attend a community college from that long and because I never thought he was the type of person to be unmotivated. My cousin was explaining that he just was not as motivated as he would have liked. He was also telling me that his parents were not pushing him to move on from Orange Coast because they did not really understand why he chose a community college over a university. I figured he had his major declared and was ready for college, but he was not. He did not declare his major until his third year at Orange Coast. The counselors were the ones to actually help him figure out his passion for education. Max was sharing that he did not realize how much he actually enjoyed learning and teaching others until he was in college. He was very honest with me

In their articles, “Two Years Are Better Than Four” and “Are Too Many People Going to College?” Liz Addison and Charles Murray discuss how colleges now are much different than colleges in the past. The college experience has changed since people, such as Rick Perlstein, went to college. Even though the college experience is ever evolving, it can still be a very important part of someone’s life. Even if it is not at a “four-year brick-and-mortar residential college” (Murray 229) like many parents and high school faculty push students to go to right away.…

The interview with Mr. Randy Taylor, a Ph. D student in the Social, Cognitive, and Neuroscience area as well as Intro to Psychology professor, was interesting because he is a relatively newer professor and somewhat closer to his students as compared to other professors. His interview involved questions about his interest in psychology, as well as the path he intends to take as a professor, as well as the struggles that he will face. Equally importantly, I asked him regarding the struggles with working in a research environment, which is an environment that I hope to some day work in. When/Why did you become interested in studying Psychology?…

College Drop Outs The experience of switching from high school to a college campus can be very overwhelming for many students in today’s society. A big question amongst many adults is why are some of these students deciding to drop out of college in their first few years? Moving to a four year college right away, instead of attending a community college, partying, feeling like no extra guidance is available, and employment issues all play a role in this.…

I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

Being a first-generation college student, I understand the challenges that students of similar backgrounds face due to not having parents to lean on for academic support. Having received guidance from different programs regarding the transfer process, I used the knowledge I obtained to do something that gave three of my closest friends, who are from similar backgrounds and don’t have such resources, an experience that would ignite the same passion and desire that I have to succeed in college. This was accomplished during the summer of 2015 when I researched, planned, and carried out a trip to various UC, CSU, and private schools throughout northern and southern California. By visiting new universities and visiting academic departments, I hoped…
