In “Interview With Julia Alvarez, 2009 F. Scott Fitzgerald Award Honoree”, interviewer Elizabeth M. Huergo, PhD., an English professor at Montgomery College, discusses briefly the concept of hyphenated space in the word Dominican American with Julia Álvarez. Álvarez states, “Uncomfortable space between is where the stories begin” (00:10:41- 00:13:00:00). Álvarez believes that the idea of being able to speak on behalf of two cultures, two nationalities are what make one a good writer. She also states in the interview that as a writer for her inspiration “is the pebble in my shoe … being outside and in between looking in” (00:10:41- 00:13:00).The feeling of discomfort helps one as a writer because it gives them the privilege to be able to look into the situation and in her case as a Dominican American, the different cultures.

A similar moment of the book was in Part II: The landlady … confrontation, pregnant Yo discovers that Marie, her landlady was being abused by her husband Clair and Marie did not want to report it, she said, “we’re having a little rocky road, that’s all … Listen here Yolander, you just remember, you’re renting this place, that’s all and what you do is your business ’cepting it’s legal and what I do is mine, you hear me” (Alvarez 161).
