Interview with a Nurse Leader I chose to interview J.C. because she has been a leader to me through multiple stages in my nursing education as well as my nursing career. While in nursing school J.C. was one of my favorite clinical instructors. She exuded pride and joy for the job that she did every day, and her enthusiasm was contagious. I now have the pleasure of having J.C. as my nurse manager at the cancer center that I work at, and she truly does a fantastic job of not only being a manager, leader, and mentor. has had added challenges with the expansion of the cancer center. This has meant constant changes being implemented at all levels of staffing. Porter-O’Grady and Malloch (2015) state that change is something that cannot be avoided, and it is the obligation of a person in a leadership position to translate and influence the changes in such a way that they inspire positive responses from others. Porter-O’Grady and Malloch (2015) note that a leader cannot expect anyone else to know what drives them if they do not know what drives themselves. What drives J.C. is her personal nursing philosophy that she must be visible and supportive of her staff in order to be a successful manager, leader, and mentor. She strives to never look at herself as above anyone else, she states, “I am one of them, and it takes all of us to give excellent patient care that we all as caregivers want to give”. One of the ways J.C. attains this goal is by always following through on any requests or questions that come her way. She believes that this is how she has built the trust of her staff.
