Interview The Sweethearts

Superior Essays
On March 26th, I attended a concert at Sidewinder in Austin, Texas. The venue hosted three bands: The Sweethearts, Two Tens, and The Dollyrots. All three were female-fronted punk rock bands, but The Sweethearts were the only band that was local. The other two were on tour with each other. All three of the bands knew each other and have played together at other venues frequently. This event held indoors. Sidewinder’s interior is set up as an open bar. When you walk in the bar is to the right, the merchandise tables are to the left, and the stage is in the back left corner. The rest of the bar is open space for people to stand or dance. The venue is not meant to be a place to grab food and a drink, but a place to listen to bands. Sidewinder …show more content…
I found these trends by asking both the band and audience members if and how gender influenced their participation. I found the pattern after interviewing The Sweethearts because they told me a similar story to the band I interviewed prior. The lead singer of the Sweethearts, Linette, is a woman, so when I asked if there were gender issues in the community, she took the lead answering the question. Linette told me that she never felt like she was not equal when participating in the community (2017). Then continued to describe one of her songs “Boys Night Out”. When her husband, Ren, (the guitarist in the band) was getting ready to go out with some of his guy friends, Linette told him she was going to go out with them too. She then told me that she was just like one of the guys, treated equally (2017). Since it was not the first time that I heard a punk rock band say they have not experienced or seen gender inequalities in the community, I concluded there is a trend in which the punk rock community defies gender issues found in other sectors of society. Performers like Linette felt as equal, as significant, and as recognized as men in the community. One gender did not dominate the music community nor did one gender repress the other. The punk rock community is a safe place for performers to have “fun” according to Linette, avoiding the pressures associated with

Summer Twins Review: A Dreamy Dance Party Kicking off Valentine’s Day weekend with great music is not a bad way to dive into the holiday, for couples and singles alike. This last Friday, February 12, Summer Twins performed at Acerogami, Pomona, CA, joined by Veronica Bianqui. The entire event had a drinks-with-friends vibe, framed by the venue’s exposed brick, low lighting, projected music videos, and a few heart-shaped balloons at the stage. The beauty of smaller venues is the level of comfort they create. Conversation before and after the show flowed easily, from excitement about the performers to stray cats and operatic voicemails.…

You're basically encompassed by individuals who are occupied with an indistinguishable music from you and have desired a similar reason. Everybody is taking an interest together with the artist and the band and everybody in the gathering of people. It's dissimilar to some other occasion since you are all there chiming in, moving, and having a good time in a vast group. Notwithstanding the way that you are unmistakably outsiders, you as of now have something in the same way as each other. Therefore don’t miss out a chance of hearing to your favorite singer such as The Doobie Brothers.…

Sidecar Open Band Jams on Tuesday nights at Shady Katie’s has led me to many musicians, far and near and exposed the collaborative world of open mics. After traveling up for a little over a year, the final night came and went out with bang. Familiar faces such as hosts Jake Falana and Josh Mayer, Rob Sankey, Maureen Martian, Smashing Saturn, Katie McCorry, Billy McHattie, Josh Maddux, Sean Christie, Tony Schott, Olivia Burton and Stan Lobby joined Shady’s final featured artists to show the stage love one last time. This would also be the first and last time I’d experience new artists at Shady’s, provided by Stay Gold.…

There are many genres of music for Americans to choose from, so there is a place for everyone to find what allows them self-expression. As a reaction to gender roles in the 1960s, feminism and queer theory became popular and made gender contentiously relate to rock music in early 1970s. In 1960s, women were disrespected in rock culture. The society still considered each sex comes with its own essential characteristics, such as aggressive for men and weak for girls. As the first stage of feminism began in west countries, musicians focus on topics about gender. Thus many contentious songs that mentioned about feminism, transgender, and homosexual appeared in early the 1970s.…

While watching the class videos “Girls on the Team” (10/27/17) and “Skirting the Issue” (10/30/17), I discovered examples of gender discrimination. Discrimination is an action or behavior that treats a person unequally because of their membership in a group (McIntyre 2011). Gender is culturally defined expectations about attributes and behaviors of males and females (McIntyre 2011). The videos “Girls on the Team” and “Skirting the Issue” display gender discrimination by using judgment of dominant and minority groups, stereotypes, and the ‘fag discourse’. The videos “Girls on the Team” and “Skirting the Issue” identify how context matters in terms of dominant and minority groups.…

Popular music has been played a vital element in everyday life, including rock, country and pop music which similarly perpetuate gender stereotypes and sexuality in the society. Gender defines the sociological categorization of human being and their characteristics as manly, womanly, or by associated terms (Clayton, Herbert & Middleton, 2011). Gender stereotype refers to the personality characteristics the perceivers believe that it subjects to the activities by the specific groups of people (Eagly & Steffen, 1984). Sexuality means emotions, movements and characteristics including sexual desires, emotional states and conducts (Clayton, Herbert & Middleton, 2011). This essay will discuss how three popular music in which rock, country and pop…

July 4, 1776 marked a momentous occasion. On this day, a nation began that would eventually become the planet’s leading power. The United States braved the fires of the American Revolution and endured a bloody civil war, but Americans were far from cleared of civil issues. American women have endured a long history of having constitutional rights denied to them. Specifically,…

I grew up listening to different types of country music all the time. Whether we were on a road trip, out on the boat, or just playing in the yard, there was always a country song playing in the background. Brad Paisley became one of my favorite singers, and I knew the words to most of his songs. While thinking about different ideas for this paper, one song stood out to me the most, You Need a Man Around Here. I had never really thought much about the lyrics, but as I started to think about them from a more sociological point of view I saw many examples of gender stereotypes and the ways that society blends the concepts of gender and sex.…

It stands to reason that if a music track is misogynistic, society will frown upon the track, for such ideas belong 50 years back. Despite this knowledge of societal repercussions, music continues to be against the feminist movement. Recent artist RaeLynn produced a track titled, “God Made Girls,” and, as expected, drew massive amounts of societal backlash as a result. In an online article titled, “RaeLynn Shakes Off Anti-Feminist Criticism of 'God Made Girls': Behind the Hit,” (http://www.etonline.com/music/160350_raelynnshakes_off_anti_feminist_criticism_of_god_made_girls_behind_the_hit/) RaeLynn responds to criticisms of being anti-feminist. When asked about whether or not she considered herself a feminist, RaeLynn responded with, “I believe that women should be treated just like men,…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

From paint spreading on a canvas, to bright lights shinning on a stage, women have equally shined in the limelight. When thinking lyrics that scream feminist, think Beyoncé; she has made it clear in all her songs that “girls run the world”, and should run this world. “We raise girls to see each other as competitors…Not for jobs or for accomplishments,….Which I think can be a good thing… But for the attention of men” directly out of her song called Flawless, Beyoncé shows how women are being brainwashed as kids, they don't even get to better them self’s, instead women do things for the attention of men.…
