I found these trends by asking both the band and audience members if and how gender influenced their participation. I found the pattern after interviewing The Sweethearts because they told me a similar story to the band I interviewed prior. The lead singer of the Sweethearts, Linette, is a woman, so when I asked if there were gender issues in the community, she took the lead answering the question. Linette told me that she never felt like she was not equal when participating in the community (2017). Then continued to describe one of her songs “Boys Night Out”. When her husband, Ren, (the guitarist in the band) was getting ready to go out with some of his guy friends, Linette told him she was going to go out with them too. She then told me that she was just like one of the guys, treated equally (2017). Since it was not the first time that I heard a punk rock band say they have not experienced or seen gender inequalities in the community, I concluded there is a trend in which the punk rock community defies gender issues found in other sectors of society. Performers like Linette felt as equal, as significant, and as recognized as men in the community. One gender did not dominate the music community nor did one gender repress the other.
