The first challenge that this family faces is the lack of true support from others. Besides the organization NAMI which the mother is grateful she has, she really does not have any other support. T talked about how her family became more distanced over the years as C’s illness started to develop and progress. Even though T and her sister live across the street from each other, they do not have a relationship anymore. T mentioned during the interview that her sister felt that their mom favored C. The sister was not really supportive of trying to help out T and C during the rough stages. This left a huge strain on T, because on top of being a single mother and all the responsibilities that raising a child with mental illness entails, she also had to deal with feeling isolated from her own family. T feels like stigma exists even within her own family about C’s diagnosis. She feels she is not getting the support she needs to take care of C. Besides her mother, C does not have much support either. Even though C is in college, she does not have many friends.
