While watching the different video’s throughout the semester, which included interviews with many people who have various disabilities, my eyes truly were opened. I work as a home healthcare aide for adults who have disabilities. Therefore I was under the impression that I was very informed on disabilities and the way that the disabled community is discriminated against on a daily bases. But I was proven wrong. Although I may be incontact with my patients who have disabilities on a daily basis, I really do not know all of their struggles that they deal with day in and day out. There is much more than not being able to use the restroom, brush their teeth, and make meals on their own. It is a more broad problem than that. When it comes to the outside community, they deal with much more. I believe that not many people truly understand what the disabled community encounters every day. I think it is important for those of us who are not disabled, to gain a better understanding of the thoughts and concerns of those who are disabled. Many of the people who were interviewed agreed on the misconceptions that people have towards the disabled community. Multiple people stated that a few huge misconceptions towards the disabled community is that they are all cognitively impaired, and that they are asexual. Another common experience that everyone shared was that the ADA laws are helpful, but have room for improvement. Many of those that were interviewed expressed that they do not believe that all faculties follow the ADA laws perfectly. Those who were interviewed that were wheelchair bound also explained that transportation is a major issue, whether it be bussing, crosswalks, or elevators.
