The Gender/Generational Interview On Gender In The Classroom

Interview Paper For the gender/generational interview paper I chose to interview my father-in-law, Mike Andridge. Mike is part of Generation X, he is a health teacher at a middle school in Plymouth, MI, and a majority of his co-workers are women. For this reason, I chose to ask him many questions about gender in the workplace. The questions I chose to ask relate to the materials that we have read and discussed throughout the semester. It was very interesting to hear all of Mike’s views and ideas about gender and different generations. I started out the interview by telling Mike a little bit about what we have learned this semester, and the major topics I would touch upon in the interview. He said that he thinks women tend to use more words and are a bit more expressive in their teaching style. On the other hand, he said he thinks that men use less words and more hands on applications to explain ideas when they teach. He expanded saying that he thinks that is changing because they are being taught that no matter who the teacher is, the big difference is the learning styles between boys and girls varies. He finished off his answer stating, “How can the teacher teach to boys and girls while utilizing all teaching strategies?”. This is exactly what we discussed in class, the idea or stereotype that men use less words and are more hands on, while women tend to use more words, expressions, and …show more content…
He said in his eyes career planning is continuing to learn your craft. Whether through education or trade schools or whatever industry a person is in, continue to better yourself. He said he thinks career advancement includes those same aspects, but also some very basic attributes: show up on time, keep a positive attitude (no one wants to listen to others whine, we all have problems), do your job plus a bit extra if needed without whining, be confident in yourself and your abilities, and always be willing to learn. He finished his answer stating, “The more you know, the more valuable you are, not only to your company but to yourself as well”. What Mike was saying makes perfect sense, your company is not going to want to promote you if you do not have positive traits.
