Over the years humans have come to rely on our canine companions, not just as working dogs, but also as Service, and Therapy dogs. With diverse research and multiple studies on the subject of Canine abilities, we realise the additional benefits our relationship with dogs may be able to provide in the future.
Man has used shepherd dogs, guard dogs, and hunting dogs for centuries, but their services to us are expanding daily. Guide dogs and Mobility dogs are no longer a novelty as we push the frontiers of the dog/human relationship. By screening for health issues, and only breeding healthy adult parent dogs with the most desirable traits, breeders are laying the foundations for physically fit, and well-adjusted offspring. Puppies are evaluated for health problems before they can undertake any training programs whether as Service or Assistance dogs, therefore excellent health is one of the most important traits a dog can possess, which is equally crucial for our own much-beloved pets.
Working dogs are often responsible for the safety and well-being of their owners, or handlers, and must be able to calmly stand their ground under a variety of circumstances, therefore confidence is also an important characteristic for which dogs may be bred for. A fearful dog may become aggressive and dangerous, which is not tolerated in working dogs, and is also an undesirable trait in family pets.
One may surprised to learn that playfulness is also a requisite trait for many working dogs, including hardcore guard dogs, detection dogs, and police dogs. Over a decade ago, Kenth Svartberg discovered the relationship between playfulness and trainability in dogs. Today there is much more emphasis on fun training methods, and trainers have also realised that dogs who love to play, are also dogs who are eager to
