Critical response journal two is a reflective response to detailed questions and thoughts pertaining to the response to intervention (RTI) model for intervention. RTI is a multi-tier approach to the early identification, intervention, and support for struggling learners to be successful in the classroom.
1. What principles relating to learning disabilities and the use of RTI to identify them were established by the Office of Special Education Programs in 2001? In August of 2001, the Office of Special Education Programs brought together leading researchers to make a consensus on identifying learning disabilities and the use of RTI. The team concluded that learning disabilities are a valid construct and span the lifetime of the identified individual. Individuals identified with learning disabilities will require special education services. The exact number of individuals with learning disabilities is unknown, but researchers believe the rate is likely between 2% to 5%. The use of IQ achievement testing is not adequate in identifying students with learning disabilities. Since processing disabilities are difficult to measure, they cannot be directly linked to learning disabilities. Progress monitoring proves to be a promising addition to providing reliable and valid data on student progress and identifying students with learning disabilities.
