A study conducted by Seligman shows that by writing down three good things or three things we are grateful for each day can have positive effects to an individual’s well-being. The study had participants noting three things they were grateful for each day in a gratitude journal. The results of this study showed a strong correlation between gratitude and subjective well-being. These results showed that after completing this activity for six months there was an increase of happiness by approximately 10%. Studies have shown that gratitude not only increases positive emotions and affects but also decreases negative emotions and or symptoms. The literature used to support this thesis is very clear in its standing and is very useful to determine the positive correlation. Gratitude has been proven to increase wellbeing by reducing toxic emotions and materialistic strivings, as well as increasing positive emotions and the accessibility to positive memory. Other studies have also shown the clear link between gratitude intervention methods and subjective happiness therefore leading to well-being.
