Imagine if the world became uninhabitable. What would you do? How would you try and help? Would you try and survive? Or would you just give up? In the movie Interstellar starring Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine, this problem is faced head on. The world becomes uninhabitable and Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, has to go on a journey to find a new planet where Earth’s population can relocate. Throughout this journey Cooper has many ups and downs that he has to deal with and overcome. In order to find this new planet Cooper has to travel throughout a wormhole to get to another galaxy and travel to three different planets until the best one to house a population is found. Some of these aspects are portals, thresholds, the Hero’s Journey and more. The main part of Interstellar that relates to our class this semester is that the movie focuses on the Hero’s Journey that Cooper partakes on. The main stages of the Hero’s Journey are the call to adventure, refusal of the call, crossing the threshold, ordeal, and the reward. Cooper goes through all these stages during the movie, some of them he even goes through twice. The movie begins with setting up the stage of why and how the world has become uninhabitable and showing Cooper’s personal life. After this Cooper stumbles across a private NASA center and he learns that NASA is exploring other galaxies to try to find a new planet that sustains life. It is here that NASA asks Cooper to lead an expedition to space, this could also be looked at as Cooper receiving his call to adventure. Like most stories Cooper refuse his call to adventure at first, saying he has to watch his children and can’t leave them. After much talk he decides to accept the call to adventure and go into space to try to save mankind. When Cooper goes into space he cross a threshold.
