Intersectionality In Microcultures

1. Intersectionality is how we are divided throughout or society by different microcultures. For example, race,class, and gender. Out of the three microcultures I am dominant in one which is class. Because I am dominant it has no effect on my cultural identity. I am in the subordinate group in race and gender. Most people stereotype me and assume I am a “lazy teen”simply because I am younger. For example, customers avoid my help because they assume I am too young to know anything. I am not a male therefore I am seen as inferior to men. As a result, I get paid less than a male. Understanding intersectionality is important because it allows us to see people in a way which we have never taught about before. If we know the meaning of intersectionality we become more sensitive to other cultures and being to understand as to how they are different from all other cultures.

2.My culture identity allows me to make sense of the world. By doing this my position in my culture helps me understand how to guide my behavior. For example, in my culture if I do not properly greet someone who is older than me it is considered extremely disrespectful. It is setup so by law one group of people are advantaged and another group is not. An example of systemic racism would be wealth. Statistics prove a white person will earn more money than a person of color. Because people of color earn less than white people they are automatically seen as inferior when in reality people of color are being discriminated against. Another example would be people of color being killed by the police. A person of color is more likely to get shot by the police than a white person.
