According to Google, the definition of intersectionality is “the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.” While this definition scrapes the surface and definitely encompasses the definition of the word, it’s hard to fully grasp the concept of intersectionality. It is not one-dimensional and we see intersectionality everywhere through our stages of life. Whether it be in the classroom or in the workplace, it is truly identifiable everywhere. It is crucial to understand how this applies to the real world because of how prevalent it is. Generally speaking, most people are blind to their privilege and understanding your own advantage is important. These privileged individuals can help facilitate the amplification of voices from marginalized groups. I will be analyzing an article entitled “Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence against Women of Color” by Kimberlé Crenshaw. Kimberlé Crenshaw is a legal scholar from Columbia University and has pioneered the term intersectionality to describe the overlapping and intersecting social identities that affect individuals' experiences of discrimination and privilege. This work examines how race and gender impact experiences of women of color in the context of violence. She argues that the already existing legal frameworks fail to account for the complexity of challenges faced by women of color. This quote demonstrates how she uses intersectionality to poke holes in the already existing movements and how they need to re-evaluate their scope to focus on the complex niche experiences that women of color face. This analysis demonstrates how intersectionality serves as a powerful tool for highlighting overlooked dimensions of identity and oppression. I am a Management Information Systems major and after college I will be doing audits for PwC which is one of the big 4 accounting firms. I will analyze the practices at this company on how they handle intersectionality. Upon starting with the company, there are mandatory training sessions which discuss marginalization and oppression in the workplace. We were required to do a certain number of hours of training so that we could acquire our badge, which is necessary. This is definitely an effective way of addressing these issues because it ensures everyone in the workplace is aware of the privileges that they have and how certain groups are oppressed. One specific training program that I remember was a black woman meeting with a white male who was her boss. She wanted to ask for a raise and the boss
