My artifact is a ribbon I won at an Interscholastic Equestrian Association horse show last year. The horse show was on April Sixteenth, and took place in Centre Hall, Pennsylvania. The show was Western Zone Finals. For a rider to qualify for Zone Two Finals, they must acquire at least fifteen points in five or less horse shows. The first object that I chose is the “Attic Red-Figure Column Krater” which was found in Athens, Greece. This Greek artifact was made in the Classical Period around 480 BCE. This object is roughly a foot tall and 3/4ths of a foot wide. The object itself is a Greek vase that widens as it nears the top. It has two handles on either side placed at the top of the vase where the bottom ends of the handles stop just before the vase bows out.…

"Try your hardest, and you will do great," Kathy Steege, my riding instructor, told me. My first year of IEA at Red Acre Farm, I was in 6th grade and I was so excited to start doing more showing. I was starting to ride more difficult horses, and I was aware of the IEA team. At the time all I knew was that it was another opportunity to show without needing to own your a horse, and I wanted to join. As an inexperienced equestrian, Kathy wasn't sure if I'd be able to do the five shows permitted for a rider; we weren't sure if I was experienced enough to be able to compete in them.…

The objects that I were assigned were the Bandolier bag from the Native American Delaware Tribe, and the Painted elk hide from the Easter Shoshone tribe. Bandolier bags were extremely popular among most Native American tribes, and each tribe expressed their culture through them in a different way. This particular Bandolier bag comes from the Delaware, or Lenape, Tribe. It is estimated that it was created around 1850 C.E., and is crafted with beads on leather hide. This object has two components to it, one being the shoulder drape and the other being the small bag.…

In order to train a horse to race barrels, there are several different parts which have to happen in order to get the horse prepared to do this activity: be physically fit, understand the queues or commands, have a basic understanding of the pattern to be ran and have a reward system in place to allow the horse to succeed and win the race. By accomplishing these tasks, it will allow the rider to win the contest and give the horse a since of accomplishment. Racing barrels is a physically demanding sport. It requires the horse to be in good physical shape and be able to withstand running at it's fastest speed for several minutes. This requires the rider/trainer to condition the horse for running.…

I chose the object, Marble Grave Stele with Family Group (560 B.C). This object I found interesting because it is a funerary object that do not have a story that is strongly believed to be true. It has two stories that could go either way. The first story is that the woman, who’s body is mostly missing, is the one in which the family to the right is mourning her death. The other story is that the woman is the only one who is mourning the loss of her family; being the sole survivor.…
