Interscholastic Academic Pentathlon Analysis

Decent Essays
When I was in Sixth grade, I was a part of the interscholastic academic pentathlon. In this competition we had trivia questions and both team and solo work. I remember we would have study groups and random sessions with the coaches to study together and to get used to what we were really in for. We met every Wednesday after school to study, we used tests and questions from past years to get the best feel for what we were going into so we wouldn’t go into the competition and be blindsided by everyone who was actually prepared and took the time to be ready when the big day came. I used the tools the school gave me like guided access to the library and computers including textbooks and websites that aren’t traditionally introduced to my grade

    1) At the second track meet of the season the sprint track coach decides to mix things up to see how a few runners would do in different events. He put a girl in the 3,000-meter run instead of her normal sprint 100. I definitely think that she would have a moment of terror, especially right before the race when she is waiting for the race to begin. The action of running has not changed, however the distance she would be running increased dramatically.…

During the second semester of my junior in high school, I collaborated with two other biology students to study for our International Baccalaureate exams in May. I am not trying to say that my teacher was a terrible teacher but the teacher was retiring the following year and did not worry too much about our success in the exams. My two classmates and I decided to form a study group. We each would study and try our hardest to understand particular chapters and then share the chapters with the other two. By going this route, we were able to maximize our knowledge intake on the year and a half biology syllabus which we did not have time for.…

As a musician, nothing terrifies you more than a botched performance. We spend weeks or months or sometimes even years working on a piece, only to get on stage and make a complete fool of ourselves. It is not that we lack the talent or passion for doing the music justice, but that simple, unmanageable factors make a huge impact when we have been stuck in the habit of using our typical environment to prepare for a performance. The smallest things can make the biggest difference- whether it be a different room, a different audience, or maybe even a different instrument altogether (which is very common as a percussionist, seeing as most of our instruments are much too large to transport everywhere we go). Nevertheless, an awful performance is…

For example, one activity that we did was a dice game where my student would roll a die and whatever number he landed on was the sentence he would read, if he got the sentence correct he got to roll again. This was a great exercise because I was able to add words that included constant digraphs, but he also got to use repetition that allowed my student to start practice reading with expression and speed. I believe that interscholastic athletic programs are an extension of the classroom. Although academics come first in the secondary school system, the lessons that can be taught and learned from athletics cannot be duplicated anywhere else in the school environment. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance are just a few of the multitude of life lessons that can be learned through involvement in high school athletics. My expectations for our programs are lofty, not necessarily in term of wins and losses but in terms of building programs, being passionate about our sports and in doing things the right way, all the time. The wins and losses will take care of themselves.…
