Interruptions in the Cell Cycle The cell cycle is the process of which a somatic or gametic cell reproduces DNA and splits into two or four different cells, respectively. This process contains multiple stages such as G1, S, G2, Mitosis or Meiosis, and Cytokinesis. Throughout this procedure, many errors can occur and be harmful to the organism. To prevent these mistakes from becoming a problem, the cell cycle contains many checkpoints and regulators (Lodish). A checkpoint is where “stop and go-ahead signals can regulate the cycle” (Urry 184). After the cell completes a certain phase, a signal transduction pathway undergoes and a signal is produced. This signal will determine if crucial cellular processes have been completed correctly or not. If the proper events have not been concluded, the cell will try to correct the errors that have been made. If the damage is irreparable, the cell will undergo …show more content…
Similar to viruses and bacteria, the cancer-causing Aurora kinases have grown resistant to normal cancer therapy (Dar). After a few years of research, scientists have found ways to target the Aurora kinases that cause cancer. Instead of normal cancer treatments, doctors have been using drugs that inhibit the Aurora kinases. When the kinases have been inhibited, they cannot function properly. This means that the Aurora-A kinase will not be able to form the mitotic spindle and the Aurora-B kinase will be unable to separate the chromatids (Dar). As mentioned above, when the kinase does not work the cell must go into apoptosis or the G0 phase. This can be an effective cancer treatment because the mutated cells are unable to further reproduce and divide, causing the tumor to grow (Agnese).
