There are a few concepts that seem to be important in forming perceptions on interracial dating. The age of the respondent is likely to affect their perceptions. Kimuna and Straus (2013) hypothesized that “The younger the respondent, the more likely they are to express approval of interracial unions.” Individuals who are from different social periods will likely view interracial dating in different ways. The participation in religion may have an impact upon perceptions of interracial dating. The membership of a church is also an example of membership with organizations. Perry (2014) stated “The findings from this study suggest that the frequency of religious service attendance—viewed as an indicator of social embeddedness within a specific religio-cultural community—influences Americans’ propensities to engage in interracial romance by engendering a preference for religio-cultural purity or sameness in romantic partners that limits respondents’ likelihood to date across racial–ethnic boundaries.” If a person is in a group, the group is likely to reflect their personal views, which are likely mirrored by members of the same race. Gender plays a role in a lot of differences of perceptions. Men and women view things in different ways. And lastly an individual’s race plays a big part in guiding respondent’s views upon interracial relationships. When we have social programs and structures that limit racial cohesion we continue to divide ourselves with those social structures. Organizations that are made up of largely one race may have an impact upon an individual’s probability to have an interracial relationship. If you spend a decent amount of your free time with members of the same race its likely that same race relations are more likely.

Perceptions of interracial relationships could lead to negative interactions towards individuals in interracial relationships, and the general public’s racial relations. With the status of our country this topic is very important and needs attention because if members of opposite races can join together successfully, then it is possible and society on a larger scale should be able to coexist in a more peaceful manner with less violence. The media is very powerful and can portray racial relations how it wishes. When the news shows violence across races it builds upon negative perceptions of other races.
