    1. Individual Component: Profile Patricia June O’Shane was born in 1941 into an interracial family (a rarity for that period), at a time when it was common practice for the removal of children from their families where it was deemed children were being neglected (McIntyre & McKeich, 2009). The removals often triggered children to feel disconnected with their culture/traditional ways and their family’s history (Cowlishaw, 2004). Both of Patricia’s grandparents had been removed from their families, which she believes is why her grandfather encouraged his grandchildren to question what they believed to be wrong in the world (O 'Shane, Miller, Miller, & O 'Shane, 2010).…

Interracial relationships have been talked and argued about since before even the colonies were established. Three factors affecting the issue of interracial relationships are the Lovings v. Imagine you are at an art museum and you find yourself in the abstract art section, the cubism, surrealism, fauvism. You gaze at the paintings with confusion, questions, and wonder trying to figure out what they mean. You look around and catch a glimpse of others around you with similar expressions. These sights of confusion, questions, and wonder are constants in my life. Similar to an abstract painting, people are confused by my appearance, and yet I have no discombobulated body like a Picasso or Dalí paintings.…

Humans acquire racial views through family relationships, socialization and cultural influences. In the movie Crash, the issue of racism was examined and expressed through the challenges the main characters faced and how they were intertwined with one another. Through these characters, we begin to see that humans learn from their experiences. For example, when the older white cop found out that his father’s insurance got rejected, he took out his anger on the African American couple who was driving home. When the cop molested the African American woman in front of her husband, he was exerting his power over them.…

Using my friend as an example, they faced many difficulties when their relationship began, most of their problems originated through their parents, who “didn’t think getting involved together would be a good decision” as if it was the parents decisions to chose who they were to love. It was hard for either of their families to accept each other, one was a hispanic family, while the other one as African-American family.…

Categorizing and identifying threat is part human defense mechanism which allowed humans to survive nature and evolve into the modern man. Identifying threat in nature allowed for better survival and by categorizing animals into dangerous or safe further improves the chances of survival. Unfortunately, this defense mechanism of categorizing and identifying threat in the modern world has shifted from animals to other humans. Describing someone based on their appearance is normal and it facilitates the recognition of that individual, but racism also developed due to natural tendency of humans categorizing subjects. In America, the land in which everyone is created equal, there is a clear evidence that equality between races may just be an ideology…
