Interprofessional Collaboration: The Key to Success

Abstract
Interprofessional collaboration of health care professionals was created by The Interprofessional Care Strategic Implementation Committee to improve all aspects of patient care. This strategy involves a team of different health care professionals who work together using established communication methods, roles, and set guidelines for a common purpose. Interprofessional collaboration in health care benefits the patient by ensuring that they get a fast and proper diagnosis using the combined knowledge of different professionals, benefits the health care providers by creating a less stressful, pleasant work environment, and works to improve Ontario’s …show more content…
As previously discussed, a team-based approach to healthcare has been proven to create a desirable work environment that makes someone’s job more enjoyable. Hearing of, or witnessing, a job with high satisfaction promotes the profession and encourages more people to enter the healthcare field. As part of the Interprofessional Blueprint, The Interprofessional Education Working Group in Ontario introduced numerous activities in healthcare institutions “with the end goal of ensuring that health science educators have a greater capacity to integrate shared interprofessional learning opportunities”(Poldre, 2003). The importance of interprofessional collaboration is taught and executed in hospitals, clinics, offices and many other environments. When all health care members have established tasks, goals, and roles for each other, it is much easier to communicate with one another to successfully complete a task. This creates structure in everyday situations and efficient execution of patient care that makes the healthcare system fast and reliable. An example of how important established methods of communication are can be found between the pathologist and gastroenterologist. When the pathologist is analyzing gastric polyps, he or she must be careful in using terms such as “consistent with” or “suggestive of” when filling out the report because those words can be interpreted differently which may lead to a misdiagnosis (Niv, 2003). The pathologist and gastroenterologist have made each other aware of avoiding those terms in order to understand one another and avoid
