Interpreting The Incident Of The Broken Unicorn

Decent Essays
A way to interpret the incident of the broken unicorn is to manipulate it as if it were Laura being broken. Even though, the unicorn was broken, Laura’s attitude doesn’t change. After the incident, Laura stated “It doesn’t matter. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.” From here we can infer that Laura has probably overcome her obsession over the glass animal collections. We can assume that Laura was the unicorn with the horn, meaning she was different from everybody else and felt lonesome at times. For most, the reaction taken by Laura came by surprise as she was not sad nor depressed of the loss. This could mean that Laura was enduring her pain and becoming a more content person.

In Medieval Europe unicorns were kind of a big thing, which is downplaying the hype a great deal. The ancient Europeans used unicorns as a religious symbols; they constantly decorated the walls and windows of cathedrals and even small church buildings with the likeness of the mythical beasts. In addition, the sale of unicorn horns was an incredibly lucrative business at the time (Unicorn Fantasy and Fact). There was even one fisherman who claimed to have found the horn of a sea unicorn and presented it to Queen Elizabeth in order to win favor. However, unicorn horn had many more uses than favor gainers.…

Her inherently curious personality was present before the goblins called for her and her mischievous decision to purchase the fruits with her lock of hair could represent her desire to defy the convention that women are modest and shy. Lizzie, for instance, “veiled her blushes” (Rossetti 597) as she ran away from the goblin’s temptations. Laura stayed. Regardless of that fact, the goblins lusting for her to come by and purchase their fruits affirms Laura’s virginity. Other critics may claim that correlating the fruits to sexual practices is unfounded as Laura is later cured by her sister’s actions at the end of the poem.…

The goblin men represent a kind of carnal lust that is frowned upon during this time. An example of this is lines, (9 11, 21) – where the description of the goblins fruit purposely taunts you into wanting to eat it – trying to get you to give into your basic desires. If the goblin men represent this carnal lust it could be said that Laura’s eating of the fruit is essentially a metaphor for a loss of her virginity. The goblin men instead of wanting Laura’s money when she eats the fruit they want a lock of her hair ‘You have much gold upon your head, / . . . Buy from us with a golden curl’”…

According to a quote in To The North written by Elizabeth Bowen, communication is necessary to form relationships and yet with communication comes conflict. This connects directly to the character of Laura Willowes, within the book Lolly Willowes by Sylvie Townsend Warner, because of her lack of connections with others, her being at peace when alone and with nature and the understanding Laura and the Devil have in speech and in silence. Although Laura speaks very freely about everything with the Devil, he already knows what she is going to say. This shows a sense of words helping but not always being necessary. In other ways speech is a stressor for Laura.…

Laurel -the subject of the poem and main character- is quite intriguing to say the least. The reason I chose to do this poem on her is because she underwent through so much character development during the course of the book. However, throughout the book she maintains four strong character traits: naivety, strength, eloquence, and spontaneity. She is the sister of May, who is now deceased. The reason she is "the fairy with broken wings" is because Laurel enjoys talking about how she and May used to pretend they were fairies, and May's wings "shattered" when she died.…

How much of what we do influences children at a young age? Things that we do that influence children, such as giving them toys and clothes based on their gender. Toys and clothes could be considered more purposeful way to engender children, but sometimes there are actions that parents do without even knowing towards their children. Without the parents knowing they are setting gender norms for their children and this would possibly affect them in the future. In the readings of “From Women, Men, and Society” by Claire Renzetti and Daniel Curran and the reading “What’s Wrong with Cinderella” by Peggy Orenstein, the authors write about how parents and society form children in stereotypical ways and how it creates gender norms.…

Although she was badly hurt and disabled, she looked past her traumatizing experience. “Although I felt very weak, I did not feel ill; and strength, one always fancies, is a thing that may be picked up when we please.” This quote shows how Laura was putting what happened to her in the past and looking to get better and stronger after she was weakened by Carmilla. The Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti is poem about a bond between two sisters, however the deeper meaning to this story is about the idea that being homosexual or having sex with someone of the same gender is not a bad thing. By being homosexual or just experimenting with the same gender does not make you evil nor does this take away any purity from you. At the beginning of the poem, Laura gives the goblins a piece of her hair for a piece fruit. This transaction of a piece of her for something else is like the first time that you have sex in which you are giving away your virginity, a part of yourself, for the experience of sex.…

The Brothers Grimm version of the fairy tale “Cinderella” is a perfect example of a person’s journey from dark to light, or, as Tatar says it, “a way out of the woods back to the safety and security of home.” (Behrens and Rosen 254) While there are many versions of the story across different cultures, this variant describes the journey not only for Cinderella, but for the desired path of the stepsisters as well. The idea of Cinderella being a story of a journey comes from Tatar’s idea, which is “fairy tales are up close and personal, telling us about the quest for romance and riches, for power and privilege, and, most important, for a way out of the woods back to the safety and security of home.” (Behrens and Rosen 254)…

Laura’s mother ultimately changes her daughter’s mind about canceling the party when she gives Laura the hat she herself was planning on wearing to the fête. Laura is at first resistant to this gift, as she is well aware that it’s her mother’s attempt at pacifying her, but changes her mind once she sees her reflection. Despite the fact that Laura considered the shattered family “nearly neighbors,” (2587) she believes throwing a party right above a home in mourning is in poor taste. She leaves her mother’s room, still wearing the hat, when “There, quite by chance, the first thing she [sees is] this charming girl in the mirror; in her black hat trimmed with golden daisies, and a long black velvet ribbon.…
