Heroes, throughout time, intrinsically portray noble stalwarts that selflessly defend commoners from imminent danger by operating with abounding strength and bravery. A steadfast moral compass, that also inherently abides within them, leads heroes to ethical and upright decisions. The poem I chose, “Happiness” by Jane Kenyon, describes what happiness truly is. It tells a story of who it comes to, and how happiness comes to everyone no matter what the situation is. As the title character of Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich takes his final breaths, he mutters “death is over…there is no death,” (134). In the same way, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a story about the life leading up to death, rather than death itself.
