Interpreters: Linguistic Challenge Of English And American Sign Language

Interpreters work with the linguistic challenge of both English and American Sign Language. They must also consider the settings, the content, the consumers and the roles they are taking. When taking on a role, they are emotionally involved due to being the middle person. Video Relay Service (VRS) requires interpreters to interpret phone calls without knowing the content, consumers or even the setting. It’s something new every time they answer the phone. Interpreters must sometimes interpret something extremely personal or depressing, something joyful or corrupt but they must do their job. They don’t know how the content will affect them until they hang up the phone. On-site assignments don’t experience emotional extremes as much as VRS interpreters
