Their Eyes Were Watching God Passages Analysis

The NLT version I read second uses “So” to end the last phrase of the story as well as the TLB. The NRSV says “And Samson’s wife was given to his companion…” which showed me this is the end. I compared that too a fairytale. A lot of times there are fairytales that end bad and so they end with a paragraph of what went wrong and what came out of it.

c. Describing other ways the author has maintained a focus throughout the passage.
The whole story started off negative, and so the author kept a steady focus on the negativity of Samson’s problems. First his parents were against the woman he found, then his wife turned on him and gave the 30 men the answer, and then she married his best man (betrayal).

Part 2: The Language and Form of your Passage
1. List all of the characters mentioned in the story. Add a very brief description that explains who they are (e.g. Solomon—king of Israel).
Samson – legendary Israelite man who was known for his strength that came from his uncut hair
Samson’s “wife” – a Philistine woman who is untrustworthy and Samson’s wife to be
Samson’s Mom and Dad – Israelites who thought Samson was choosing the wrong girl and did not now that it was for the Lord, but retrieved her for him anyways
30 men – convinced Samson’s wife to give her the answer to his riddle so that they would not owe him 30 linen garments and 30 festal garments
Rank the characters in order of their significance for the story.
1. Samson
2. Samson’s wife
3. 30 men
4. Samson’ mom and dad

2. Based on how you highlighted/shaded the narration and dialogue in your passage, write a few sentences that explain the relative proportions of characters’ speech and the narrator’s description. Also state the relative amount of speech among the different

Approximately 60% of the text is dialogue from different characters, while the other 40% is from the narrator. Most of the dialogue comes from Samson himself, but when Samson is not the one to speak, the dialogue varies and either comes from his parents, his wife or the 30 men. Of the 11 lines of dialogue, Samson speaks for 6 of them (54%). His parents only speak 1 of the 11 (9%), his wife also speaks of only 1 line (9%), and then then Samson’s 30 companions speak 3 of the 11 (27%).

3. List the actions of each character in your story.
Samson – went to Timnah, fell in love with a Philistine woman, tore the lion apart barehanded, scraped honey out of the lion carcass and ate it, gave a riddle to 30 men, revealed the answer to his wife to be, killed 30 men of the town for their garments
Samson’s wife – met Samson and his parents – sided with the 30 men – coaxed Samson into giving her the answer to the riddle – married his best man
30 men – went to Samson’s wife to get the answer to the riddle from her – answered the riddle – received the 30 festal garments
Samson’s parents – doubted Samson’s love interest – went to Timnah to get her

The fate of the telescope model was as described in Perelman’s title, the trash. Through the title, the author creates a connection between the reader and himself, emphasizing that he is only human, therefore he can only follow such meaningless directions so closely. Eager to learn the outcome of this similar situation that he was put through, I was prompted to read his essay.…

It has been said that what we value can be determined only by what we sacrifice. This applies to several characters in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, especially Orleanna, Nathan, and their daughters. Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. The sacrifices made by these characters contribute to the novel as a whole by giving it depth and greater meaning, just as these sacrifices make each character’s intentions clear and presence throughout the novel more relevant. Orleanna made countless sacrifices throughout the novel for her husband.…

CANARY is an intriguing one hour proposed pilot that offers a complex and compelling female protagonist. The concept for this dramatic, crime show is also intriguing. The idea of a troubled woman coerced into spying on her friends and family to help the FBI track a domestic terrorist has appeal. However, it should be noted that some audiences may not be able to take the leap that the FBI would consider using an obviously dysfunctional woman to help track a very deadly bomber.…
